What is CNAM?

Most phones are able to display text in addition to the calling number as the caller ID. This is called CNAM. If you aren’t familiar, the CNAM service is capable of displaying the business name or any custom text associated with your phone number to the calling party (on an outgoing call). CNAM is simply a Caller ID Name, which is a 15-character string.

To display name information when making outbound calls, a number must be registered in a central database. There is a database that controls Caller ID for outbound calls.

For example, in the United States, this database is called CNAM. If your number is saved to a device's local address book, you don't need the CNAM registry. This is to display your name when calling new devices that have CNAM database lookup enabled.

How to setup CNAM with CloudTalk

At this moment, it's possible to setup CNAM with US and Canada numbers purchased from CloudTalk. If you would like to use CNAM with other numbers, there are the following options:

  1. Purchase a registered CNAM number from another carrier and then request to add this number to CloudTalk account. After the number is validated, you will be able to make outbound calls with it. The name will display as if you're calling from that caller ID number.

  2. Port in a CNAM registered number from another carrier. See more about number porting to CloudTalk.

Important notice: We cannot fully guarantee that this will always work, because both you and the person you’re calling need to be registered in the system (through a phone provider) for your business name to appear. For example, if the carrier of the calling party does not support CNAM lookup, your business name won't be displayed.

It is just a different name for CNAM in Canada.
