What is STIR/SHAKEN?
STIR/SHAKEN (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited / Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information Using toKENs) is a call verification framework for USA operators, designed to combat caller ID spoofing and reduce robocalls.
Carriers use digital tokens to "attest calls" to verify that they know the calling party and calls are actually coming from the number displayed on caller ID.
CloudTalk can register USA phone numbers with our carrier directly on your business, so they are sent as a “verified call“, with the highest A-level Attestation.
You can read more about CloudTalk's STIR/SHAKEN compliance on our website
What do different levels of STIR/SHAKEN Attestations mean?
In the STIR/SHAKEN framework, attestation levels indicate the level of trust a telecom provider has in the caller's identity and their authorization to use the phone number.
There are three attestation levels: Full (A), Partial (B), and Gateway (C). Here's what each level means:
Attestation levels help telecom networks assess the trustworthiness of incoming calls.
A-Level Attestation
improves call completion rates and reduce potential call filtering by your recipients
can help avoid spam tags
✅ Full Attestation (A-Level)
Highest level of trust.
The carrier confirms:
The caller (your business) is authorized to use the phone number.
The caller (your business) is known and verified.
Example: Calls made directly by a provider’s verified customer using their assigned number.
This will be the ensured attestation level if you undergo the Stir/Shaken verification process
⚠️ Partial Attestation (B-Level)
Moderate level of trust.
The carrier can identify the origin of the call but cannot verify the individual business, and if they’re authorized to use the displayed number.
Example: Calls made by business customers who use a shared VoIP system or PBX, where the specific outbound number isn't directly verified.
this is the default attestation without verification process
🚨 Gateway Attestation (C-level)
Lowest level of trust.
The carrier received the call from another network but cannot verify the caller’s identity or number.
Example: International calls entering the U.S. network where the originating number’s validity can’t be confirmed.
