Overview
While CloudTalk and our carriers do not place restrictions on using CloudTalk numbers externally, WhatsApp (Meta) does restrict the use of VoIP numbers in its mobile apps.
We understand that many customers want to use their CloudTalk numbers on their personal phones to communicate with contacts via WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business. However, due to limitations enforced by Meta and local telecom regulations, CloudTalk cannot guarantee that its numbers will work in WhatsApp mobile apps.
If you choose to try activating a CloudTalk number in WhatsApp, please keep the following points in mind.
We understand that our users are on the go, and they may want to use their CloudTalk numbers in their own phones to talk with customers on WhatsApp.
Important Limitations to Be Aware Of
WhatsApp does not officially support VoIP numbers in its mobile apps. Because of this, CloudTalk cannot guarantee that a number from a specific country will be usable in WhatsApp externally.
Verification codes may not be delivered.
Some local operators do not support sending OTP or 2FA messages to virtual or hosted VoIP numbers.Support can change over time.
Meta and country-level restrictions may change without notice. A number type that worked previously may no longer be supported later. In most cases, when Meta stops supporting a country or number type, new activations are blocked, but existing numbers are not immediately deregistered.
WhatsApp / Meta Rejections
🇺🇸 USA Numbers
As of 2024, WhatsApp blocks activation of all USA hosted VoIP numbers.
If you attempt to activate a CloudTalk USA number, you will see an error indicating that the number is not valid.
Unfortunately, this means that CloudTalk USA numbers cannot be registered externally with WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business.
🌍 Other Countries
For some countries, CloudTalk numbers may initially register successfully in WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business.
However, in many cases:
WhatsApp later detects the number as unsupported
The number may be deregistered after a few days
You may see an error stating that the number cannot be used due to a policy violation
This behavior is controlled entirely by Meta and may change over time.
Trying Activation Anyway (Not Guaranteed)
If you still want to attempt using your CloudTalk number in WhatsApp, you can follow WhatsApp’s official activation process:
WhatsApp Messenger
Supports mobile numbers onlyWhatsApp Business
Supports mobile and landline numbers
(Landline numbers must be verified via a verification call, not SMS)
If You Don’t Receive the Verification Code
If the SMS verification fails, you can try verification by phone call:
"After you enter your phone number, please wait for an SMS to be delivered to your phone. The SMS will contain a 6-digit verification code, which you can enter on the verification screen in WhatsApp. The verification code is unique and changes each time you verify a new phone number or device. Please don’t guess the verification code as you may be locked out for a period of time. [...] If you don’t receive your code via SMS, our automated system can call you with your code. Please wait for the timer to finish counting down and do not edit your number during this time. After the timer ends, tap Call Me."
