Old Anti-Spam Techniques are no longer effective

As carrier networks and call analytics systems grow more sophisticated, previous spam evasion workarounds are no longer reliable.

In many cases, previous tactics can actually trigger more aggressive filtering rather than prevent it.

  1. Constantly Replacing Numbers is no longer the standard

Previously, businesses would rotate or "burn" numbers once they were flagged and use fresh numbers to connect to their customers.

While this is a lingering common practice, rotating number is becoming an obsolete way to avoid spam flags.

  • Carrier analytics detect high churn in number use as suspicious behaviour and can make them more likely to apply spam tags

  • Carriers may consider numbers without a proven positive calling history as high risk

  • Rotating numbers can trigger faster flagging of new numbers

  • It erodes brand recognition and creates inconsistency in caller identity

Carriers see this as a sign of spam-like behaviour and may flag numbers as spam if they do not have any call history. For example, fresh numbers with a low "maturity rating" are more likely to be flagged as spam with Hiya (AT&T's analytic provider).

2. Free registries are only a first-line defense (e.g., Free Caller Registry, Hiya)

Free registration services like Free Caller Registry or Hiya are a Band-Aid solution for high volume call centers.

These are great steps for first level protection of your numbers, but this method is insufficient on its own for high-volume or parallel outbound calling:

Type of Protection

What They Do

Level 1 - Basic Protection:

Free Caller Registry, Hiya Protect, etc.

Only provide initial notification to carriers of company name + their numbers

  • These services are static registries: they do not actively prevent or remediate against spam flagging over time.

  • These submissions don’t guarantee number approval or spam-free status overtime

  • Carrier analytics engines consider behavioural data over static registry entries

  • Hiya's free portal only shows results of flagging with their partners and not all USA operators

Level 2 - Advanced Prevention and Monitoring:

Number Reputation Management Numeracle

Monitoring and prevention tools:

  • create a comprehensive profile of your business directly with the USA operators (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T)

  • regularly scan to show when a number has been flagged for spam across multiple carriers and databases

  • automatically submits numbers for remediation when they are flagged as spam
