# Rename a contact tag

> Renames a contact tag. The new name is cleaned up before it is checked and stored, as on [Create a contact tag](/api-reference/contacts/create-a-contact-tag). The tag keeps its id, and every contact that has it shows the new name. Read-only tags cannot be renamed (see [List contact tags](/api-reference/contacts/list-contact-tags)).

- Dialer campaigns, VIP queues, call flows and webhooks refer to tags by id, so they keep working.
- Workflow Automations that use the old name in a condition stop matching, and an automation that adds the tag by name creates a new tag with the old name. Update those automations after a rename.
- The contacts that have the tag keep their `updatedAt`, and no `contact.updated` webhook is sent for them.
