# List contact tags

> Returns your contact tag catalogue, sorted by name in character code order. The order is case-sensitive: uppercase letters come before lowercase ones, so `Beta` comes before `alpha`. Use each tag's `id` wherever this API takes `tagIds`. Call tags are a separate catalogue: see [List call tags](/api-reference/call-tags/list-call-tags).

**Read-only tags.** A tag with `readOnly: true` cannot be added to or removed from a contact, renamed or deleted through this API: those requests return `422 CONTACTS.TAG_READ_ONLY`. A tag is read-only when either holds:

- It is an integration tag (`type: integration`), for example a CRM source tag, or a Zapier or Tray tag.
- Any contact has it through a CRM integration, for example a CRM list tag that feeds Dialer campaigns.

One known gap: a CRM list tag whose connection has not synced any contact yet shows `readOnly: false` until its first sync. Plain tags stay writable, including tags that Dialer campaigns, VIP queues or call flows target.
